The Match: Residency Placement at AUSOMA

Every spring, medical students across the United States eagerly await Match Day—the moment they discover where they will complete their residency training and in what specialty. Held on the third Friday of March, Match Day is one of the most exciting milestones in a physician’s journey.

For AUSOMA students, Match Day is more than just a ceremony—it’s the result of years of preparation, academic excellence, and the personalized support our faculty and advisors provide along the way.

What Is The Match?

Graduating from medical school earns you your Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. However, before practicing independently, new physicians must complete additional residency training, which typically lasts between three and seven years depending on the specialty.

In the United States, placement into residency programs is organized through The Match℠, managed by the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®). Established in 1952, the NRMP ensures a fair, uniform system for matching students with programs using a Nobel Prize–winning algorithm.

How The Match Works

The Match is designed to align the preferences of medical students and residency programs. Students apply to residency programs, interview, and then submit a ranked list of their top choices. Programs do the same, and the NRMP’s algorithm pairs applicants with available positions.

The Match Timeline

Applications (September)

Students apply to residency programs through the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®), submitting transcripts, USMLE®/COMLEX scores, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. AUSOMA advisors guide students through this process to ensure competitive applications.

Interviews (October–February)

Programs invite applicants to interviews. AUSOMA provides mock interview practice, coaching, and feedback so our students feel confident meeting residency directors and faculty.

Match Week (March)

Results are released. Students first learn if they matched (Monday) and then where they matched (Friday).

Match Week at a Glance

  1. Match Monday: Students find out whether they matched into a residency program. In recent years, over 94% of applicants matched at this stage.
  2. SOAP® (Monday–Thursday): Students who do not match initially can apply for open residency spots through the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program®. AUSOMA provides one-on-one support during this critical week.
  3. Match Day Friday: At noon ET, students open their results to discover where they will begin residency. AUSOMA celebrates alongside our students as they take this next step in their medical careers
